What is your Design Style?

Figuring out your design style can be one of the hardest things for some people. If you've tried it on your own, it can be overwhelming. You know what you like and dislike but can't pull it altogether. The best way to start is by asking yourself a few questions. Our firm starts every design project with a questionnaire this way, we have a better understanding of your preferences and design goals.

What is a Design Style?

By following your taste, you will find out a lot about your style. What do you consider your style is? If you don't know, think about it and ask yourself the following questions.

  1. When you see an interior design in a magazine, which do you like: Contemporary, Modern, Transitional, Traditional, Mid-Century Modern, or something else?

  2. Do you have a favorite piece of furniture or artwork you love?

  3. Is there a public place that you like? (Think hotel, museum, or even a TV show set)

  4. Finally, what overall mood do you want to create for the house?

How to Figure Out Your Design Style

Now you are figuring out your style. Take a clue from your answers above and start putting them together. For instance, you like modern, clean lines, love The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in NYC, have original Andy Warhol artwork, and want a room to relax and watch TV after work. Our interior design firm would recommend a slick, bold design plan. Maybe in black, ivory, or all monochromatic white. Keeping the design sleek and minimalist with leather sofas, chrome, and a shag area rug.

Designing Your House

Next, ask yourself what you love and hate about your current home. In other words, you will uncover many of your design tastes, which will help determine your design style. As interior designers, we ask our clients many style questions and will show them furniture and design magazine photos to narrow down which style they relate to best.

Pulling it all Together

The famous Bunny Williams, Interior Designer, once said, "If you love something, it will work. That's the only real rule." In other words, imagine you just inherited an antique piece of furniture but love Contemporary designs. How will you make it work in your house?

Antiques have a past, almost a soul, and they carry a story. Besides, in a design plan, antiques add excitement to the room. For instance, if you look at any European magazine, you will see examples of mixing the old with the new. Similarly, it's a key feature of many beautiful homes. Therefore, it is the perfect mix with contemporary design. The significant part is that this "look" comes across naturally and easily. In conclusion, adding a few pieces from your family's history will surely bring some character and personality to your home.
