Tips to Brighten Up Your Home

If your home lacks natural light, you may want to find ways to bring more brightness into your living space. We've compiled some design tips to help illuminate your home. From choosing the proper lighting to using reflective surfaces, these suggestions aim to enhance the light and vibrancy of any room in your house, creating a more inviting and uplifting atmosphere for you and your guests.

How to Brighten up Your Home

To brighten up your home, it's not just about turning on a few lights or opening the blinds. As interior design professionals, we use specific design tips that can transform your living space. One tip is to choose a paint color with a high "Light Reflectance Value" (LRV). LRV measures the amount of visible and usable light that reflects from or absorbs a painted surface. In simpler terms, it measures the percentage of light a paint color reflects. Using a paint color with a higher LRV can bring brightness to even the darkest room. Additionally, it's beneficial to use paint colors that are cooler in tone, such as blue, gray, mint green, crisp whites, and pink.

Adding a Mirror: It's almost like adding a Window

Consider incorporating a well-placed mirror to effectively capture and reflect the natural light pouring in from a window situated on the opposite side of the room. By strategically positioning a mirror on the wall facing the window, you can significantly amplify the amount of natural light permeating the space. For instance, you may opt to install a sizable mirror to maximize light reflection, or you could create a visually appealing gallery wall by grouping together multiple smaller mirrors. This approach not only enhances the brightness of the room but also adds a touch of visual interest and depth to the overall decor.

What’s on your floors?

Consider covering your floors with a light-colored area rug or opting for light-colored wall-to-wall carpets. This seemingly simple adjustment can have a substantial impact on a room's overall brightness. Light-colored flooring reflects more light, creating a spacious and airy feel, making the room appear larger and more inviting.

Window Treatments

When selecting window treatments, you may consider using light-colored drapery, such as white sheers or curtains. These choices can serve as a bright lightbox, effectively diffusing and reflecting natural light into the room. This creates a soft, gentle ambiance throughout the space, enhancing the overall atmosphere and making the room more spacious and inviting.

Your Kitchen Cabinets

Consider updating your kitchen by painting your cabinets white or light gray, particularly dark wood. This simple change can immediately uplift the overall look of your kitchen, making it feel brighter and more spacious. In addition to painting the cabinets, installing lighter countertops can further enhance the brightness of the space. You may want to explore various options, such as granite and quartzite countertops that mimic the elegant look of marble while adding brightness to the kitchen, contributing to a more luminous and inviting kitchen atmosphere.

Bonus Tip- incorporate silver, nickel, or brass metals into a room. These metal accessories will reflect light throughout the space.
