How many Accent Pillows?

Accent pillows can enhance a room's design by adding color, texture, and personality. However, finding a balance between a stylish arrangement and an overwhelming display is crucial. Here are some guidelines to help you decide if you're using too many accent pillows in your design.

Proportion and Scale

When selecting pillows for your furniture, consider the size of the piece. A standard sofa typically looks best with two or three pillows, while a larger sectional can accommodate four to six pillows for a more modern look. It's also preferable to use a small number of large pillows rather than many small ones.

Place three euro shams against the headboard for a king-sized bed, followed by two king shams and one or two decorative pillows in front of them. Three to five pillows are usually sufficient for a queen- or king-sized bed, while a twin bed may only require one to two accent pillows.

Functionality and Comfort

Consider ease of use. If the pillows need to be moved every time someone sits down, there are probably too many. Also, functionality should not be compromised for aesthetics. Ensure that the seating is still comfortable. Too many pillows can make a sofa feel cluttered and uninviting.

Remember to stick to a cohesive color palette. Using too many different colors and patterns can make the space look chaotic. When mixing patterns, do so thoughtfully. Combine solids with patterns and vary the scale of the patterns to avoid visual overload. Leave some negative space - not every inch of seating needs to be covered with pillows. Allowing some open areas can make the design feel more breathable. Use pillows to create focal points rather than spreading attention too thinly across the space.

Personal Preference and Style

Your design preference matters when styling your space with pillows. If you prefer minimalism, choose fewer carefully selected pillows. If you lean towards a maximalist approach, choose a more abundant and eclectic mix. It's important to step back and assess the space regularly. This will help you maintain a balanced design and ensure that the space doesn't feel too busy or hinder the practical use of the furniture.
