Get the Best Night’s Sleep

Sleep Well, Be Well. When you think of wellness, you think of fit people that work out every day. But equally as important as diet and exercise is the importance of sleeping well. Did you know that you spend one-third of your life sleeping? So it's essential to invest in high-quality bedding and pillows. This way, you'll get the best night's rest. In addition, creating a relaxing bed will give you a comfortable night’s sleep for years.

The Essentials needed for Styling your Bed

There is so much terminology about the different components that make up bedding that it can get confusing. However, using the following "basic cheat sheet" for your bedding will help. Start with a mattress pad, a flat and fitted sheet, and at least two pillowcases, then add the pillows, pillow shams, duvet, or comforter.

Best Night Sleep Starts with the Bedding

My recommendation to clients when styling their beds is that we start with the bed sheets first. It's much easier to select a paint color that matches your bedding than the other way around. Select a color palette you can live with long-term and buy the best bedding you can afford. Sleeping on high-quality cotton sheets will not only help you sleep better. They will last for many, many years.

Duvet vs Comforter

The comfort of a relaxing bed and your sleep involves deciding whether to use a duvet, comforter, or a coverlet in the summer. As a design professional, I prefer a duvet cover with a down insert. Because with a duvet, you can change the outside with the seasons. Therefore when designing for our clients, we like to order two duvet covers ( one for summer and one for winter) that coordinate with the color scheme for the bedroom. In addition, we want to include a coverlet at the end of the bed for extra warmth and a splash of color.

Pillows, Pillows, and more Pillows

The pillows are one of the necessary items for a great night's sleep. However, sleeping with a pillow that keeps your spine aligned with your head is best. In other words, start with the comfortable sleeping pillow, then add European decorative pillow shams. We use two for queen-size beds and three for king-size beds. Then finish the bed with decorative pillow shams and a few throw pillows.

One layer at a Time

When designing a bedroom for our clients, we always factor in the essential components of a fantastic bed ensemble. However, not all features are needed depending on the type of bed we are working on within the design. For example, if you have a platform bed, there is no need for a bed skirt. In other words, styling your bed for your best night’s sleep should match the mood and design of your bed. Happy sleeping!
