4 Design Mistakes You want to avoid

Four common interior design mistakes to avoid when decorating your home: Most are fixable with a little effort and planning.

Harsh Overhead Lighting

Overly bright or harsh overhead lighting can create an unwelcoming atmosphere. Instead, combine ambient, task, and accent lighting to establish a warm and inviting environment. Overhead lighting is great for large gatherings or when you need a lot of light, like cleaning or searching for lost items. However, incorporating layers of lighting such as lamps, wall sconces, and a chandelier can produce a softer overall ambiance for your space.

Too Many Mismatched Pillows

While decorative pillows can add color and texture to a space, excessively mismatched ones may create a cluttered and chaotic look—unless you are looking for the boho aesthetic. Strive for a balanced approach by using a cohesive color palette and incorporating various textures that complement each other. And no more than four to six pillows on a sofa.

Ill-Fitting Window Treatments

Window treatments that are too short, too long, or improperly mounted can detract from a room's overall aesthetic. Always hang drapery as close to the ceiling when installing it. We like to install our window treatments 6 inches below the crown moldings, which creates the illusion of height in the space. Ensure that your blinds and shades are measured and installed correctly and fit the window with minimum light gaps. If needed for room darkening, it’s best to layer your shades with drapery for a complete room-darkening effect.

Not Controlling Light Temperature

Light temperature can significantly affect a space's mood and functionality. Use warm lighting in living areas to create a cozy atmosphere and cooler lighting in workspaces such as the laundry room and garage to enhance focus and productivity. However, if your kitchen is open to your great room, be mindful of your lighting choices to avoid harsh, overly bright lighting with a bluish tone. We recommend using 3000k lighting for the most even lighting in kitchens and family room situations. Additionally, consider using dimmable lights or smart bulbs to adjust the light temperature according to your needs.
