Bring Nature into Your Decor

Interior designers know firsthand how a person's home can affect mood and happiness. In addition, people feel better after spending time in rooms with nature in the decor. Unfortunately, as a society, we spend up to 90% of our time indoors. So how can you bring the outdoors into your home? We will outline a few minor changes that have a significant impact. Introducing natural design elements to your home is the foundation of biophilic design.

The Benefits of Nature in your Decor

When exposed to nature, stress levels go down. Also, after being outdoors in nature, cortisol levels' effects go down. Imagine that feeling after a day at the beach or on vacation. Have you noticed how that feeling stays with you? Adding natural elements to your decor gives you a sense of nature in your home. Consider positioning your furniture to capture the outdoor views.

The Addition of Nature

For instance, artwork that represents nature—adding a small plant on the cocktail ottoman. The faux plants in the market today look so lifelike most of your friends will never know they aren't the real deal. Adding pillows with a soft neutral vibe marries the whole color scheme nicely.

Bringing Nature into Your Decor with Biophilic Design

  • Nature in the decor. By having house plants, a fish tank, and pets, having direct views or access to a garden or courtyard view. These direct connections to nature have the most substantial impact on us.

  • Natural Analogues include adding faux plants, artwork representing nature, or wallpaper with nature-inspired design. Architecture that evokes nature is an example of natural analogs.

  • Nature of the Space. This is how space planning and architectural design affect human responses and feelings. For example, think of an open floor plan with a sunroom or high ceilings.
